Mannheim, Germany, 5 October 2026. Watch Water® GmbH is celebrating 25 years of FILTERSORB® SP3, its specialist medium for salt-free scale prevention. The company reports that more than two million systems incorporating SP3 have been sold through its global distribution channels. Its message to the industry is clear: the technology inside the vessel deserves as much attention as the system around it.

Engineered surfaces. Proprietary know-how.

FILTERSORB SP3 nucleation assisted crystallization showing calcium carbonate crystal formation on filter media

FILTERSORB® SP3 uses Nucleation-Assisted Crystallization (NAC). Watch Water® describes its double-layer-coated modified ceramic media as an engineered surface that directs calcium carbonate nucleation and promotes the formation of aragonite microcrystals. The proprietary formulation and manufacturing process behind this behaviour are protected as trade secrets.

This is the distinction at the heart of SP3: control of the crystal-forming surface and the resulting crystallization behaviour. Watch Water® positions SP3 as its own engineered technology; a shared reference to crystallization does not establish equivalence between competing media.

Scale protection with practical operating benefits

FILTERSORB® SP3 is designed to convert dissolved carbonate hardness into suspended microcrystals, helping prevent hard deposits on pipes, heating surfaces and equipment while retaining minerals in the treated water. It provides scale control without conventional ion-exchange softening.

No salt addition. No continuous antiscalant dosing. No regeneration cycle or regeneration wastewater. Simple upflow operation allows professional partners to integrate the media into residential, commercial and suitable industrial applications. Correct sizing, pretreatment where needed and operation within the specified water-quality limits remain essential.

Experience behind the technology

Founder Deepak Chopra brings more than 50 years of hands-on water-chemistry experience to Watch Water® ’s development work. The company states that every product undergoes intensive laboratory testing, typically for two to three months or longer, before release. Its manufacturing portfolio includes more than 200 products for water treatment, wastewater treatment and air filtration.

For SP3, Watch Water® concentrates on manufacturing the functional media. Distribution partners and OEMs build the complete systems and provide local engineering and customer support. Watch Water® reports that customers are moving from competing scale-prevention products to SP3, reinforcing its focus on specialist media and long-term partner relationships.

Judge the technology by the product-specific evidence

A study that has not tested FILTERSORB® SP3 cannot establish another product’s superiority over it. Likewise, measuring deposited scale and investigating freshly formed crystals answer different questions. SP3’s crystal-formation mechanism should be evaluated with methods suited to the particles produced, alongside application-specific scale-prevention testing.
