METAL ORGANIC FRAMEWORKS TECHNOLOGY (GRANULES)

Metal Organic
Frameworks

Watch-Water® has developed Metal Organic Frameworks (MOF) based adsorbent that can selectively capture soluble organic, inorganic & heavy metals from water. This water is passed through granules which have carbon core surrounded by a Hematite ferrite shell. It has the highest adsorption capacity. Therefore, FERROLOX-X is applied in a very simple passive pump and treat system applying the technology of Fixed Bed Adsorption.

Since the adsorption process is a surface process. Only the surface area of the adsorbent is of great importance. FERROLOX-X internal surface area is consisting of 70% Macropores and 20% Mesopores and only 10% micropores. The macropores and mesopores are primarily relevant for the mass transfer into the internal pores of the FERROLOX-X granules.

Loaded FERROLOX-X adsorber can be regenerated by using SOLAROXY-3C.

FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS

FERROLOX-X is a next-generation, Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) based adsorbent. It features a carbon core surrounded by a hematite ferrite shell, engineered to selectively and efficiently remove heavy metals and organic pollutants from water.

Unlike conventional media, FERROLOX-X combines a massive specific surface area (up to 3000 m²/g) with a unique pore structure optimized for mass transfer. It has a higher iron (FeOOH) content (min. 66%) for superior heavy metal adsorption and the mechanical stability of a carbon core, preventing pressure drop issues.

It effectively removes a wide range of heavy metals including Arsenic, Lead, Selenium, Chromium, Cadmium, Mercury, Nickel, Copper, Manganese, Silver, and Zinc. It also removes organic impurities like pesticides, PFOAs, microplastics, and pharmaceuticals.

No. A key benefit of FERROLOX-X is that it removes harmful contaminants while preserving essential healthy minerals (like Magnesium) in the water. RO systems remove these minerals, creating “dead” water. FERROLOX-X provides mineral-rich, clean water without the wastewater and energy consumption of RO.

FERROLOX-X has an exceptionally high adsorption capacity of 80 grams per liter (by volume), making it one of the highest-capacity media available and extending filter life significantly.

Yes. Loaded FERROLOX-X media can be regenerated using Watch Water®‘s SOLAROXY-3C process, which uses sunlight and a photocatalyst to oxidize and destroy the adsorbed organic pollutants, regenerating the media for reuse and dramatically reducing operating costs.

Its applications are vast, including:
• Residential & Commercial Drinking Water treatment
• Municipal Water treatment
• Food & Beverage industry
• Purification of sugar & beverage
• Wastewater Treatment and Water Reuse
• Condensate Polishing
• Final Purification & Polishing
• Aquatic and aquarium water

pH Range: 5 – 9
Flow Direction: Down-Flow
Service Flow Rate: 15 – 30 m/h (6 – 12 gpm/ft²)
Minimum Bed Depth: 80 cm (31.5 inches)

The adsorption process in FERROLOX-X is a surface reaction. The granules are based on Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs), making it the first commercialized MOF technology for water treatment. FERROLOX-X has an extremely high internal surface area composed of about 70% macropores, 20% mesopores, and 10% micropores, allowing rapid mass transfer into the granule.

The surface of the media is covered with hydroxyl (-OH) groups, which undergo:
• Protonation at low pH ($\equiv S–OH + H⁺ \rightleftharpoons \equiv S–OH₂⁺$), giving the surface a positive charge.
• Deprotonation at high pH ($\equiv S–OH \rightleftharpoons \equiv S–O⁻ + H⁺$), giving the surface a negative charge.

This means the adsorption efficiency depends on the pH of the water:
• At low pH, the surface is positively charged, enhancing adsorption of negatively charged contaminants (anions such as arsenic, chromate).
• At high pH, the surface is negatively charged, enhancing adsorption of positively charged contaminants (cations such as lead, copper).
• In simple terms, FERROLOX-X uses its MOF-based structure and dynamic surface chemistry to achieve high and selective adsorption of both cations and anions, making it a powerful and versatile technology for water purification.

FERROLOX-X is developed and manufactured by Watch Water® GmbH in Germany, an innovative industry leader in advanced, bio-friendly water treatment technologies.
