IRON HYDROXIDE BASED (GRANULES)
FERROLOX
INTRODUCTION
FERROLOX® (IRON HYDROXIDE BASED GRANULES) is one of the best adsorber to load major worst contaminants in drinking water treatment with high capacity and also because of its chemical activity, ferric (III) hydroxide is quite appropriate to bind arsenate, phosphate or sulfide ions in aqueous media.
Using a patented process, ferric hydroxide can now be produced in a granular form. Various bead diameters can be made by combination of crushing and sieving procedures. This gives access to a great variety of new applications of Ferric (III) hydroxide.

APPLICATIONS
The Filter media, containing iron hydroxide Fe(OH)3 has an amorphous structure. The ferric ions content in the filtering media is about 40% by weigh. Because of its chemical activity, Ferric (III) hydroxide is quite appropriate to bind arsenate, phosphate or sulfide ions in aqueous media. Due to internal high pH of media it has an additional effect of the reaction with H2S and can reach oxidation capacity up to 20% by its dry weight. Hydrogen Sulfide is a colorless gas with an offensive stench and is said to smell like rotten eggs. The gas can be detected at a level of 2 parts per billion. It is very errosive in a wet state and become Sox when it is oxidized.

FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS
FERROLOX® is a granular adsorber media made from amorphous ferric hydroxide (Fe(OH)₃). It is manufactured in Germany using a patented process to create highly porous granules optimized for removing heavy metals and other contaminants from water.
FERROLOX® is highly effective at removing Arsenic (V), Phosphates, Selenium (IV & VI), Chromium (VI), Copper, and Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S) from aqueous media.
Removal is a two-step process:
- Adsorption: Arsenate or phosphate ions bind to the surface of the FERROLOX® granules.
- Chemical Conversion: A chemical reaction occurs, converting the bound ions into stable, insoluble compounds like ferric arsenate (FeAsO₄) or ferric phosphate (FePO₄), permanently trapping them.
It is versatile and can be used for:
- Drinking Water and Well Water treatment
- Municipal and Industrial Wastewater
- Reverse Osmosis pre-/post-treatment
- Removal of Hydrogen Sulfide from water
- Aquarium water treatment
FERROLOX® can be used in both. The system design depends on space availability and Watch Water® highly recommends Up-Flow systems for significant advantages: they require 50% fewer tanks, have no need for valves, electricity, or backwashing, and allow for 100% utilization of the media’s capacity.
In a conventional down-flow system, periodic backwashing is recommended. However, in the preferred Watch Water® Up-Flow Adsorption system, no backwashing is required, which simplifies operation and eliminates wastewater.
Spent FERROLOX® media is a non-toxic solid waste. Under normal conditions, no leaching of trapped contaminants like arsenic occurs. Its disposal is not problematic and it can even be advantageously recycled as a component in brick manufacturing, resulting in zero environmental concerns.
The capacity varies by contaminant:
- Arsenic (As⁵⁺): 13 g/kg
- Phosphorus (P): 16 g/kg
- Zinc (Zn): 30-40 g/kg
- Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S): Up to 22% of its dry weight
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Bulk Density | 630-640 kg/m³ |
| Particle Size | 0.5-2.0 mm or 2.0-4.0 mm |
| Specific Surface Area | 290 m²/gram |
| Ferric Hydroxide (Fe(OH)₃) Content | min. 75% |
FERROLOX® operates effectively in a wide pH range of 5.0 to 9.5.
Yes, FERROLOX® is certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 for use in drinking water treatment systems. Available certification from Water Quality Association (WQA) and The International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO).
Unlike Ion Exchange and RO, which produce concentrated regenerant effluent or brine that is difficult and costly to dispose of, FERROLOX® produces no liquid waste. The spent media is solid and inert, making it a much more environmentally safe solution.
FERROLOX® is manufactured by Watch Water GmbH in Germany, a specialist in developing advanced and pragmatic water treatment solutions.
