NITRATES REMOVAL FROM WATER
HIGH CAPACITY ADSORBER PLUS DE-ADSORBER

SELECTIVE NITRATES

ADSORPTION & DESORPTION

Nitrotrapp® for nitrates removal from water is the World’s first High Capacity Adsorber plus De-adsorber to selectively Trapp Nitrates. It has 5 times higher capacity than any other commercially available adsorber in the market. Nitrotrapp® has been specially manufactured to meet Drinking Water standards and has passed,

Nitrotrapp® is different from all other nitrate removal systems in the market in several aspects. The custom-designed adsorber removes not only nitrates from drinking water but also provides healthy bicarbonates. “This can’t be achieved simply by any other media, which are based on Ion Exchange or Reverse Osmosis.” Anion exchange for nitrate removal is similar to a water softener, where a relatively large amount of sodium chloride is typically used.

FORMULATION OF

NITROTRAPP

Nitrotrapp® media is Bead-like-Material that traps Nitrate ions from liquid and water. Nitrotrapp® is a deadsorable or in other words a reversible process in which Nitrate ions from insoluble permanent solid medium are exchange for healthy ions. Nitrotrapp® beads are based on very selective chemical and physical properties of both beads and ions. However, Nitrotrapp® with higher selectivity for Nitrate and none of the other competitive ions like sulfate, silicates, phosphate or bicarbonates. Nitrotrapp® beads are selectively manufactured in chloride form but can be regenerated with following available salts

QUESTIONS

NITROTRAPP® is a high-capacity nitrate adsorber and de-adsorber media developed by Watch Water® GmbH, Germany. It selectively removes nitrate (NO₃⁻) from drinking water, groundwater, and wastewater — achieving up to five times higher capacity than conventional ion-exchange resins.

Excess nitrate in water is a major global concern. High nitrate levels can cause:

  • ☛ Methemoglobinemia (“blue baby syndrome”) in infants
  • ☛ Increased risk of cancer and cardiovascular diseases
  • ☛ Ecological imbalance in aquatic systems

WHO and EPA regulations limit nitrate to 10 mg/L (as NO₃⁻) in drinking water.

The media operates through selective adsorption and desorption:

  • Adsorption phase: Nitrate ions are trapped onto the functional sites of the NitroTrapp® beads.
  • Regeneration phase: Nitrates are released during regeneration with a magnesium or potassium brine solution.

The regeneration waste is not harmful — it forms valuable fertilizer (magnesium or potassium nitrate solution).

Technology Drawbacks NitroTrapp® Advantage
Ion Exchange Requires 8× NaCl brine; high salt waste Regenerated with MgCl₂ or KCl; waste becomes fertilizer
Reverse Osmosis High water loss and concentrate waste No brine disposal; up to 40% water saving
Conventional Adsorbers Low selectivity for nitrate Highly selective — rejects sulfate, phosphate, silicate

NitroTrapp® = Simplicity + Performance + Sustainability

  • ☛ Service mode: Down-flow nitrate removal.
  • ☛ Backwash (optional): Loosen bed, remove solids.
  • ☛ Regeneration: 3–5% MgHCO₃, Mg(OH)₂, or KCl/MgCl₂ brine upward.
  • ☛ Rinse: Flush with 5 bed volumes of clean water.

Regeneration restores full capacity and creates usable fertilizer solution.

  • ☛ 5× higher capacity than conventional nitrate resins
  • ☛ Selective for nitrates — unaffected by sulfate, phosphate, bicarbonate
  • ☛ Regenerable using eco-friendly brines
  • ☛ No toxic sodium waste — fertilizer by-product
  • ☛ Simple system design — minimal maintenance
  • ☛ 40% water and 60% salt savings vs ion exchange
  • ☛ Made in Germany and certified for drinking water
  • ☛ Groundwater and well water
  • ☛ Surface water and agricultural runoff
  • ☛ Food & beverage process water
  • ☛ Wastewater and aquafarm effluent
  • ☛ Municipal systems

Effective for nitrate up to 1,000 mg/L, achieving > 99% reduction.

Yes. It is ideal for both point-of-use cartridges and point-of-entry systems, and performs reliably in compact and large-scale installations.

Regeneration produces magnesium or potassium nitrate solution, which can be reused as agricultural fertilizer — unlike harmful sodium brine from conventional ion-exchange systems.

2–5 years, depending on nitrate load, regeneration frequency, and system design. The media retains integrity and performance across multiple regeneration cycles.

Yes. It meets international drinking-water standards, with no harmful leaching, and passes taste, odor, and 100% de-adsorption tests.
