Phosphates and phosphonates are non-biodegradable chemicals that are used extensively in domestic and industrial applications. There are environemental concerns that once in rivers they can extract heavy toxic metals from mud and sediment and cause remobilization of the metals in the environment that may have adverse long term effects.
